The device has a spring, which defines a valve element rest position at a distance from an end position, defined by a stop, an electromagnetic, which when energized with a pull-on current pulse moves the valve element against the action of the spring, and a regulating device for regulating the striking speed. The regulating device regulates the striking speed by varying the adjustment of the switch-on time (tE) of the pull-in current pulse. The regulating device is set up for minimum-valve regulation, in which the switch-on time which is selected for the next valve actuation is the time from, a preceding actuation plus a regulation increment ( delta tE) defined as a function of the switch-on time as a minimum-target function of the gradient (dvA/dtE) of the striking speed. The gradient is ascertained from preceding actuating cycles. An Independent claim is included for a method of controlling the striking speed in the electromagnetically actuated valve element.
