This invention relates to a process for the synthesis of ethers or esters comprising reacting an alcohol or carboxylic acid with an organic halide to produce an ether or ester respectively and a hydrogen halide, wherein further organic halide for the production of ether or ester is generated in situ by reaction of the hydrogen halide with an alcohol.
