In a process to remove sludge from a water treatment plant settlement basin, the sludge is pumped from the basin and subsequently de- watered. The basin (1) inlet and outlet are first shut and any aeration installation is closed down and removed to a second treatment basin (2). Water is then drained from the first basin (1) to the second basin (2), until the water level has descended to that (5) of the sludge (KS) surface. The upper surface sludge (KS) phase is then pumped from the basin (1) and de-watered, the water being surrendered to a buffer basin (10). Water is then drawn from the buffer basin (10) and sprayed onto the residual semisolid sludge in the first basin (1). The residual sludge is liquefied by the watering process, removed from the basin (1) by pumping and de-watered, the water being returned to the buffer basin (10).
