The link between the subscriber exchange (LE) and access node (AN) contains an interface (V.5.2) with useful channels in a system of base channels with fixed base data rate. The exchange allocates to the interface useful channels to the access node by remultiplexers (REMUX 1,2). Both the exchange and access node contain signal converters (C1,2), converting communication signals by compression between PCM and second digital ADPCM with base data rate reduce to one half. The remultiplexers are controlled by a speech recogniser (V-REC), identifying useful channels carrying speech exclusively. Independent claims are included for connection set-up.
