The method involves loading operating parameters in a proximity switch (1) equipped with an over-current monitoring arrangement (8). This comprises an externally adjustable potentiometer (10), a load connection (4), a switching element (7), as well as a microprocessor (14) which records an over-current simulated at the load connection. Both final positions of the potentiometer, as well as the simulated over-current condition at the load connection of the microprocessor, serve as training conditions, in which a first and/or second detected measurement difference is stored as a first and/or second switching threshold in the proximity switch.
