An electromagnetic actuator for operating a gas exchange valve of a prime mover or processing machine is described. An armature (6) with the connected valve that can be driven in oscillating fashion between solenoids (4,5) which are spaced apart forms a part of the moved mass in a spring- mass system. The closing magnet 94) holding and driving the valve in the closing direction can be adjusted via a length equalization device (7). An electrochemical actuator (8) serves as this. The actuator can be controlled via a control circuit (9) based on a current pattern in the closing magnet with the approach of the armature for the purpose of positioning the closing magnet for a valve held closed.
