A method to detect a mutation associated with pancreatitis comprises DNA extraction by standard protocols and then: a gene specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR), where exon 2 of the cationic trypsinogen is amplified out; purification of the PCR product; use of three primers, which are a reverse primer, a forward control primer and a mutation specific primer that hybridizes specifically to the product of the gene specific PCR; and detection by hybridization through acrylamide gel electrophoresis or a similar method.
