Drying clarified sludge, comprises mechanical pre-dewatering (e.g. by pressing and centrifuging) and treating with calcium compounds (preferably quick lime and or milk of lime) before and/or after pre-dewatering. Gas containing carbon dioxide is passed through the sludge, so that calcium hydroxide is dispersed and the sludge is completely converted to carbonate and the water is still present in the sludge and formed during carbonation is removed by the emerging gas.
