The axle has wheels (8a,b) and an brake unit (9) acting on both wheels, and positioned axially between the wheels. The wheels are each connected to an axle shaft (5a,b) turning within the axle housing (1). The brake unit has a brake rotor (11a,b) connected to each axle shaft, which are moved into active connection with a brake stator (10) by a common actuator unit (12). The brake unit is operated mechanically and/or hydraulically.
