The incoming plants (7) are fed from an open air pre-processing station (2) into the operating shed (8), by two conveyors (3, 4). The first conveyor (3) raises the plants to working level and the second (4) is the main sorting conveyor. At a lower level than the main conveyor (4) is a distribution belt (5) which reciprocates (14) over the floor level grille table (7). The system is used to separate plants from each other and from the compost and to grade according to size.
