Melt pressure (p) in the screw flights (5) is measured by a pressure sensor (6) and automatically monitored in relation to time and the datum point (0) for the screw stroke (s) is established at the point at which the slope of the pressure (p)/time curve or the variation of the slope lies above or below a set value. An Independent claim is included for the process plant which includes a pressure sensor (6) close the screw flights (5), a system for automatic monitoring of the screw flight pressure and a method for defining the datum point (0) for the screw stroke at which the non-return valve (2) is completely closed. Preferred Features: The zero point for the screw stroke is established at a point where the slope becomes negative.
