PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make hydrogen in a mixed gas more selectively oxidizable by bringing a mixed gas containing hydrogen and a hydrocarbon into contact with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of an oxidation catalyst containing a platinum-group metal and niobium oxide or tantalum oxide and a heat-resistant inorganic carrier as essential components. SOLUTION: The oxidation catalyst usually has a composition of (platinum- group metal)/X/(heat-resistant inorganic carrier)=(0.001-10)/(0.1-80)/(10-99.899) (wt.%) (X is niobium oxide and/or tantalum oxide). Concrete examples of the mixed gas containing hydrogen and a hydrocarbon are dehydrogenated hydrocarbon produced by the dehydrogenation reaction of a stock hydrocarbon with a dehydrogenation catalyst and a mixed gas composed of unreacted stock hydrocarbon and hydrogen. A gas having a molecular oxygen content of 1-100% is used as the oxygen-containing gas. Concretely, the gas is preferably air, oxygen-enriched air, air diluted with an inert gas, etc. The oxygen-containing gas may contain steam. |
