A filter for filtering water in ponds or aquaria has a plurality of filamentary filter elements (12) of a synthetic plastics material. The filter elements (12) are like the bristles of a brush and are mounted on a mounting member (14) by means of a U-shaped clip (16), with the option of a further clip (16) retaining the depending ends of the bristles.
