PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide hydration of an olefin for obtaining the corresponding alcohol while controlling the activity, by subjecting water and olefin to a continuous reaction of hydration in the presence of a specific catalyst in a vapor phase while recirculating an olefin not yet reacted. SOLUTION: This method is conducted by subjecting (A) an olefin and (B) water to a continuous reaction of hydration for obtaining the alcohol while recirculating the component A not yet reacted for return to reaction of hydration, in the presence of (C) a catalyst comprising a heteropolyacid of an alkaline (earth) metal salt of silicotungstic acid or phosphotungstic acid soluble in a polar solvent, at <=40 deg.C in a vapor phase. The component C pref. comprises <=4 mol. of alkali metal cations or <=2 mol. of alkaline earth metal cations based on 1 mol. of hetero-polyacid, more pref. comprises 1 to 2 kinds of univalent cations in hetero-polyacid salts, viz., a mono- or di- potassium salt. The component C is pref. carried by a siliceous carrier.
