PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce formamide that is useful for medicines and the like with industrial advantage by liquid phase reaction between a specific amine and carbon monoxide in an alcohol in the presence of a catalyst that comprises an alkali metal fluoride and can be easily handles in the air. SOLUTION: A catalyst comprising an alkali metal fluoride and a zinc compound (preferably a combination of potassium fluoride and zinc oxide) is used as a catalyst to carry out the reaction of an amine of the formula: R1 -NH-R2 (R1 and R2 are each H, a 1-10C alkyl or the like) such as ammonia or the like and/or a diamine of the formula: NH2 -R3 -NH2 (R3 is a 1-10C alkylene, an aromatic group) such as m-xylenediamine or the like with carbon monoxide in a liquid phase, preferably at 100-200 deg.C under the pressure of 1-10 MP thereby producing the objective formamide. |
