PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a low carbon refractory which has high resistance against spalling and corrosion and is capable of inhibiting carbon pick-up to molten steel to the utmost and to provide a method for producing the refractory, and though the refractory has a dense structure, it is not excessively sintered and maintains a good resistance against spalling even in the case that it is used for a long period of time at high temp. SOLUTION: A mixture composition of raw materials comprises refractory raw materials and carbonaceous raw materials containing carbon. The carbonaceous raw materials are added in an amount such that it has a fixed carbon content of 0.2-5 wt.% based on 100% the total residual weight when the mixed composition of the raw materials is heat-treated. As a portion of the carbonaceous raw materials, an organic binder having a fixed carbon content of >=25 wt.% or, further, a viscosity of <=200 poises), pitch (having β-resin content of >=10 wt.%) and carbon black can be used singly or plurally. |
