PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a member having durability against repeated stress at high temp. or thermal load due to repetition of heating and cooling, by mechanically processing a formed body of vitreous carbon, impregnating the body with a resin as a source material and then sintering. SOLUTION: After a resin as the source material is hardened, the resin is calcined to obtain a formed body comprising vitreous carbon. Then the formed body is mechanically processed into a desired form and impregnated with a resin after mechanical processing. Then the formed body impregnated with the resin is calcined to change the resin into vitreous carbon. Thereby the obtd. vitreous carbon member has little surface defects since microcracks formed on the surface in the mechanical processing are sealed. Thereby, the obtd. member has higher fatigue strength and thermal fatigue strength under high temp. As for the resin, for example, a resin prepared by polymn. of a furan source material such as furfural or an imide source material can be used. |
