The mass flowrate of a viscous mass pumped (37) from a kneader (30) to a mixer (40) is controlled (100) from a mass flow meter (38) signal (138). Preferred Features: The delivery of additives (50, 60, 70) to the mixer inlet (41) is similarly controlled from the mass flowrate signal (138). Further flow meters are attached to the additive lines, signaling to the control unit. The controller operates both the viscous mass pump and the additive pumps. The additive feed section includes a positive displacement pump feeding a pressure reservoir, with feed again under mass ratio control. The mixture produced is used in a plant producing sheet molding compound (SMC), in which reinforcing layers of glass metal or organic fibers are inlaid into the viscous mass.
