The tubular heating element consists of an outer metal sleeve (1) with a plano-oval cross-section and a helical heating wire (2) embedded in ceramic material coaxially inside the metal sleevee. To ensure good contact to the heating wire and to give sufficient distance between this contact and the metal sleeve a flat punched pin (6) is inserted axially into the end of the element. The inner end of the pin is pointed (7) to locate inside the tapered end of the helical wire. The cross-section of the wire is shaped to match the pin end. The outer end of the contact pin has recesses (9) which are used to facilitate connection.
