Plant growth regulating compsns. comprise as active component one or more phospholanium salts of formula (I) (where R1,R2 are opt substd. alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or cycloalkyl, or aralkyl opt. substd. in the aryl ring; R3 is halogen or alkyl; n is 0, 1 or 2; A- is a non-phytotoxic anion). Compsns. are used for treatment of plants and seeds at an application rate of 0.01-50 kg/ha pref. 0.05-10 kg/ha.
