A process for producing tabular silver halide grains in a dispersion medium solution, wherein the dispersion medium comprises a gelatin derivative containing at least two carboxyl groups (-COOH) which are newly introduced through chemical modification of amino groups (-NH2) of gelatin molecule, thereby monodisperse tabular silver halide grains small in thickness and large in aspect ratio are provided.
