The two parts (5, 6) of the key (3) are normally coupled together, the first part (5) containing a circuit with a first code stored on it, which when read by the lock unit (4) in the absence of the second part (6) allows control over a restricted number of lock unit-regulated functions. The second part contains a circuit with a second code stored on it, this circuit being designed to be able to communicate with the circuit in the first part, so that when the two parts are coupled together, a code is generated which when read by the lock unit allows full control over the lock unit-regulated functions.
