A method for use in preventing or reducing back pain of a person comprises providing a foot rest defining three side by side substantially horizontal support surfaces at different heights carried on a pair of side support walls arranged to support the support surfaces at spaced position from the ground. The support walls define an open rear face facing the patient. The patient places one foot onto a selected one of the horizontal support surfaces and a front part of the other foot so as to be inserted into the open face at least partly under the horizontal support surface while resting on the ground such that the one foot of the user can be supported the support surface while lying partly along side the other foot. The three surfaces define two raised side surfaces and a lower intermediate surface.
