The automatic opening mechanism has a spring-loaded bolt (26) and cam (22) interacting with a catch plate (21) on the drum (5) to engage or disengage the door lock (20). The mechanism comprises a catch plate (21) on the drum (5), capable of a limited movement, and a pivoted cam (22) which is able to rotate relative to the drum. The catch plate is designed to receive the tip of a spring-loaded bolt (26) actuated e.g. by an electromagnet (27), and the movement of the catch plate causes the cam to pivot and operate the door lock (20). To engage with the catch plate the bolt moves perpendicular to the side wall of the drum, passing through the adjacent wall (41) of the drum housing and its movement operates a micro-switch which switches off the drum drive motor.
