The method involves moving the airbag unit (4;10) to a position from which the airbag provides effective protection when inflated. The distance between a person to be protected by the airbag and the airbag unit is determined (32) and the unit is moved (12,16,18; 22,24) so that a predefined distance is achieved. When the airbag is inflated it acts upon the person being protected in a direction away from the airbag unit and the unit is released to enable it to move away from the person when the force exceeds a defined level. |
