The two pistons (1) almost come in contact at TDC. They are connected to separate connecting rods, and when at TDC the two hemispherical piston heads enclose a spherical volume. A channel (8) in one of the piston heads allows fuel to be injected into the spherical volume. The pistons have long thin skirts, are made in sections bolted together, and the usual piston rings are replaced by sealing cuffs (4). There are inlet and exhaust ports in the cylinder wall.
