The cylinder head (14) of the internal combustion engine is shaped like a shallow pitched roof. The fuel injector (22) is positioned in the center and the spark plug (23) is positioned to one side. A trough (21) is formed in the piston head to form a combustion chamber (15) between the cylinder head and the top of the piston. The fuel is directly injected into the combustion chamber and the spark plug projects into the trough on the top of the piston. The vertical distance (P1) between the tip of the injector and the trough is less than the distance (P2) between the electrodes of the spark plug and the bottom of the trough. the center (C) of the trough lies between the points under the tips of the injector and the sparking plug. The base of the trough slopes along the line connecting these two points.
