A thermal toning sensor, esp. for determining the carbon content in diesel engine exhaust gases contains a combination of a ceramic foil heating element (B) and at least one ceramic foil positive temp. coefficient temp. sensor element (A). - The heating element is continuously or intermittently operated with constant heating power. The heating and temp. sensing elements form a single foil unit.
