3-Aminoacrolein derivatives (I) are produced by introducing an iminium chloride (II) into an aqueous base at -15 to 30 deg C. Production of 3-aminoacrolein derivatives (I) comprises introducing an iminium chloride (II) into an aqueous base at -15 to 30 deg C. R<1> and R<2> = 1-4C alkyl or NR<1>R<2> forms a 5-7 membered heterocycle; R<3> = H or 1-6C alkyl or alkoxy; and R<4> = 1-8C alkyl.
