An electric double layer capacitor excellent in safety which can be used as a power source for the starting of a cell-motor, for a hybrid car or for the back-up for a personal computer or the like, and a method for preparing the same. An electric double layer capacitor comprising a polarizable electrode and a polymeric gel electrolyte being present between poles, wherein the polymeric gel electrolyte is prepared by impregnating a fibrous sheet composed mainly of a fibrous or pulp material of an organic polymer which can dissolve in or be swollen with a non-aqueous electrolytic solution and can form a gel, with a non-aqueous electrolytic solution, and dissolving the material, followed by gelating it, and a method for preparing the same.
