The invention concerns a protective breathing equipment comprising a breathing mask provided with a regulator designed to be connected to a breathing mixture source under pressure and a harness having at least one extensible belt whereof the ends are linked to the mask and which comprises an element which can be temporarily inflated by the pressurised breathing mixture to extend the belt up to a sufficient dimension to enable the user to fit the harness on his head and capable of being deflated to enable the belt to press the mask against his face. The extensible belt is connected to a face piece by at least a mechanical member whereof the length is adjustable by the user while he is wearing the equipment.
