In a first process stage a lower reinforcing part(26) of the box-like stabilizing member(68) is formed of a hard coating material on the rear side of the cushioning material(62) in the mold(10). An upper reinforcing part(66) of a hard coating material(54) is then cast onto the lower reinforcing part and connects with both the latter and the cover material(42). Preferred Features: The cover material(42) is formed of a soft coating material(22) in a cavity between the tool surface(12) and a first cover. The first cover is then removed and replaced by a second cover which is used to produce the first lower reinforcing part(26), an upper reinforcing part(66) and a second lower reinforcing part for the next cycle. After removal of the first tool cover a flat member is placed onto the lower reinforcing part to form a cavity in which an upper reinforcing part is cast. A second casting head is then inserted through the second cover to feed the flexible foam material(62) onto the cover and around the first reinforcing part.
