The sulfuration of the bimetallic hydrotreatment catalyst using a stoichiometric excess of sulfur in a liquid phase treatment before the final sulfuration temperature (maximum temperature before onset of coking), gives improved performance, i.e. better activity and stability. The process is applied to a petroleum refining catalyst which contains at least one group VIII metal in the oxide form. It comprises a sulfuration stage using H2S or a precursor as the sulfurizing agent, added before the catalyst attains the final sulfuration temperature. At least 130% of the stoichiometric amount of sulfur necessary for complete sulfuration is injected. Independent claims are also included for the activated catalyst obtained and its uses.
