Fuel additive for neutralization of sulfur oxides in exhaust gases from internal combustion engines

The fuel additive comprises a metal or organometallic compound which combines with sulfur dioxide and trioxide formed on combustion of the fuel, in an oxidizing atmosphere, to give a stable sulfate (e.g. barium sulfate) which can be filtered out of the exhaust gases and avoids poisoning of the catalytic convertor. In the neutralization of sulfur dioxide and/or sulfur trioxide in the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines, one or more mineral or organometallic compounds are added to the fuel which, on combustion in an oxidizing atmosphere, forms stable sulfates in the exhaust gases. An Independent claim is also included for the use of the process in internal combustion engines.
