This invention provides a factor isolated from Helicobacter pylori which exerts an anti-inflammatory effect on host cells. In particular, the protein of this invention inhibits IL-1 or TNF alpha -induced upregulation of ENA-78 protein production in epithelial cells. Methods of increasing host cell inflammatory responses, especially to H. pylori infection, are provided.
