Use of aqueous boronic acid derivatives useful for e.g. coupling to dyes and used to dye cut flowers or live plants

Aqueous solutions of boronic acid derivatives (I) are used for measuring the extracellular pH on the surface of animal or plant cells' outer membranes. Use of an aqueous solution of a boronic acid derivative of formula (I) for measuring the extracellular pH on the surface of animal or plant cells' outer membranes, is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) use of aqueous solutions of a compound of formula (II) for staining flower petals; and (2) use of aqueous solutions of a compound of formula (III) for measuring metal ion concentration in plant tissues or cells.
