Production of material labeled with carbon-13 (<13>C) by cultivating plants in an atmosphere containing carbon dioxide (CO2). Production of material labeled with carbon-13 (<13>C) by cultivating plants in an atmosphere containing carbon dioxide (CO2) is carried out by a process in which: (a) photosynthesis, starting with a limited supply of CO2 or a substance capable of undergoing rapid carbon isotope exchange with CO2, takes place in a system to which no carbon is added and from which carbon is exclusively or predominantly removed in the form of organic compounds produced in the course of assimilation; (b) the plants, at least in the first phases of consumption of the carbon supply, are C3 plants; and (c) the biomass produced in the latter phases of CO2 consumption by assimilation is either used directly as <13>C-labeled biomass or separated into individual <13>C-labeled fractions.
