To break down paper materials (S), of used paper for recycling, it is mixed with water (W) to be ground and form a suspension. A circular vessel (1), with an inner rotor (2), generates a movement flow of the suspension with an inner downwards flow (4) and a radially outwards upwards flow (4'). An upper guide surface (5) deflects the upwards suspension flow (4') inwards into a downwards flow (4), in a recirculating flow pattern. The guide surface (5) covers at least 30% or at least 60% of the upper end surface of the vessel (1) in contact with the suspension flow. The guide surface (5) has an adjustable height setting, and applies a variable vertical force. The vessel (1) has a cylindrical or oval side wall (3). The upper guide surface (5) has an upper opening closed by a cover, where impurities and especially ink particles in the suspension (S) are forced upwards for removal. An Independent claim is included for an appts. with a round vessel (1), open at the top, covered by a lid (6), and a suspension flow guide surface (5) at the top of the vessel which covers at least 30% or 60% of the upper surface of the vessel radially inwards from the side wall (3). Preferred Features: The lid (6) covers the top of the vessel (1), with a flat flow guide surface (5). The height of the lid (6) is adjustable. The guide surface (5) is at an angle to the side wall (3) of <= 75 deg . The rotor (2) is positioned so that its center line coincides with the symmetrical line through the vessel (1).
