摘要 <p>The invention comprises a method of detecting the presence of a chemical component in an off-shore liquid such as sea water. A stream of the liquid is subjected to passage therethrough of a chemically inert carrier gas, whereby the chemical component contained in the stream, and any particulate matter associated therewith, is entrained by the gas. The gas, entrained component, and particulate material (if any) are removed from the liquid; and the particulate material is separated from the gas and chemical component. The gas and chemical component are then passed into a plasma, and the light emitted therefrom spectroscopically examined. The method has considerable advantages over conventional techniques for the detection of chemicals in off-shore liquids, which have generally required the study of on-shore deposits. Furthermore, the present invention is particularly useful in the detection of uranium and related minerals, whereas the prior-art techniques are ineffective for the detection of such materials under large bodies of liquid, such as sea water.</p>
