<p>An automotive vehicle steering column lock assembly has a lock ring (20) mounted to the steering column (14, figure 4A) and having at least one recess (22, figure 4A), and also has a lock pawl (32) movable between a lock position engaged in the recess and an unlock position disengaged from the recess. The pawl is held in a tray (26) which is adapted for slidable movement within the steering column housing (16) generally parallel to the steering column. Movement of the tray between the pawl locking and unlocking positions is controlled by control means (54,58) linked to the vehicle ignition switch (18), and may take the form of a rack and pinion arrangement. There is also means (70,82) for preventing the pawl from entering its locking position when the key (62) is positioned in the ignition, thereby preventing the lock mechanism from engaging until the key is fully removed.</p> |
