PURPOSE:To manufacture an electrochromic (EC) element of high quality with high production efficiency by coating the whole surface of a substrate having a transparent electrode with an insulating film except through hole sections and patternwise forming an electrically conductive transparent film and an EC film on a part including the through hole sections. CONSTITUTION:Making ink is applied to a part for forming through hole sections 13 on substrate 2 having transparent electrode 9, and after coating the whole surface of substrate 2 with insulating film 12, said ink is removed to form through holes 13 in film 12. Electrically conductive transparent film 9' and EC film 10 are then vapor deposited continuously on a part including through hole sections 13 through metallic mask 11 having openings of the desired pattern while maintaining the vacuum. Thus, an electrode section of display side is formed. Since electrode 9 of the electrode section is perfectly covered with films 12, 10, reduction blackening is hardly caused even if the resulting EC element is worked repeatedly. |
