<p>The invention concerns apparatus for picking and cutting mushrooms having at least one cutting blade (71), a blade receiving plate (72), and at least one aperture (85) in the plate (72) which receives mushroom stalks for cutting, with the caps of the mushrooms held on a top part of the plate (72) and the stem of the mushrooms extending through the aperture (85), and means for moving the plate (72) and/or the blade (71) relative to each other to cut the mushroom stalks held in the aperture (85). In one embodiment, the apparatus has a cutting head (10) including an upper plate (72), and a lower plate (73), a blade (71) mounted between the plates (72, 73) and slidable between the plates (72, 73). Each plate (72, 73) has a plurality of complementary fingers (84) which define the slots (85) therebetween. The slots (85) are dimensioned to receive a plurality of mushrooms (16) with the caps (19) resting on the upper plate (72) and the mushroom stalks (18) extending downwardly through the slots (85) in the plates (72, 73). The cutting head (10) is mounted on a pantograph frame with pivoting links, such that when the cutting head (10) is moved from a picking position to a packing position, this causes the blade (71) to move across the slots (85) to sever the mushroom stalks. The invention includes a wheeled trolley which moves along aisles between mushroom growing beds and has a seat which enables a mushroom picker to sit facing the mushroom growing beds, substantially at right-angles to the direction of travel of the trolley. Mushroom processing equiptment projects laterally from the trolley and extends over the mushroom growing beds, including a mushroom cutting device (10) as described above. <IMAGE></p> |
