Electrical discharges, especially "partial" discharges in electric power transmission systems, are detected and their sources located by detecting radio-frequency radiation by means of a movable antenna array and a receiver and interpreting the received signals in relation to the position and orientation of the antenna array to determine the direction of the signal and thus the location of its source. A time-domain technique using broadband antennae (specifically discone antennae or multitrap dipoles) is preferrred but an alternative technique using multiple directional (Yagi) arrays is also described. <IMAGE> |
