PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound expressed by a specific formula and suitable for an active matrix type liquid crystal display element driving every pixel. SOLUTION: The compound is a compound of the formula [R is a 1-12C normal alkyl; X and Y are both H, or one of them is H and the other is F; (m)=1, 2; (n)=1; C* is an asymmetric carbon], e.g. (R)-(+)-3-fluoro-4-(1- trifluoromethyl-4-methylpentyloxycarbonyl)phenyl = 4'-n-decylbiphenyl-4- carboxylate. Further, the compound of the formula is preferably obtained, for example, by reacting 4-hydroxy-2-fluorobenzoic acid with acetic anhydride at 80 deg.C for 30 min while adding sulfuric acid dropwise under water cooling and passing via 4-acetoxy-2-fluorobenzoic acid, the reaction product of the above reaction. |
