PURPOSE:To obtain the titled liq. crystal cell which responds at high speed and can be worked independently of the light transmitting characteristics of the electrodes by arranging two comb-shaped transparent electrodes so that they meet at right angles at the upper and lower sides, injecting a nematic liq. crystal into the space between the electrodes, and orienting liq. crystal molecules at right angles to the electrodes. CONSTITUTION:Two comb-shaped transparent electrodes 1, 2 are arranged so that they meet at right angles at the inside of an upper substrate 3 and the inside of a lower substrate 4, a nematic liq. crystal is injected into the space between the electrodes 1, 2, and liq. crystal molecules 7 are oriented at right angles to the electrodes 1, 2. The resulting liq. crystal cell has an ordinary twist nematic liq. crystal cell structure. The electrodes 1, 2 are kept at the same potential, and by applying a voltage between both the surfaces, an electric field is produced almost perpendicularly to the cell surface. Next, by applying a voltage between the electrodes 1, 2, an electric field is produced mainly parallel to the cell surface. Thus, the electric field exists even in the OFF state, reducing the time necessary for response. |
