PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To utilize a vibration wave device and to detect ambient temperature by uniquely determining the ambient temperature of the vibration wave device according to the relationship between the drive frequency and the setting speed of the vibrational wave device being driven. SOLUTION: According to the temperature detection result of a temperature sensor 101, equipment 103 for selecting speed accesses a table 102 where the speed is set for each temperature for selecting the proper speed. Based on a selected frequency, a driving frequency is controlled by a controller 104 for adjusting speed, a bi-phase drive pulse is outputted to boosters 105a and 105b, and a vibration wave motor 106 is driven. The speed of the vibration wave motor 106 is detected by a speed detector 107, and the detection result is sent to a comparator 108. The comparator 108 compares the detection value of the speed detector 107 with the value of the selection equipment 103, and performs feedback control for inputting the speed difference of the frequency to the controller 104. The drive frequency is readjusted by the speed difference which is selected by the detector 103 to match the speed.
