MODIFICATION OF STEELMAKING REDUCED SLAG

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To modify a steelmaking reduced slag which is conventionally difficult to reutilize so that the reduced slag can effectively be utilized. SOLUTION: A reduced slag containing 2CaO.SiO2 is once cooled to provide a powder causing the modification to aγ-structure. The resultant powder is then heated to a higher temperature than the modification temperature and modified to anα- or/and anα'-structures. The obtained powder is subsequently quenched to a lower temperature than the modification temperature to maintain theα- or/andα'-structures at normal temperature. The resultant slag modified by the method has hydraulic properties comparable to those of a cement and can be used as a cement substitute or a cement additive, a soil conditioner or a raw material or an additive for building materials.
