PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a optically active compound having a trifluorobutyl group, exhibiting a stable antiferroelectric chiral smectic phase in a wide temperature range, and useful as a material for liquid crystal displays. SOLUTION: This optically active compound is a compound of formula I [(m) is 4-16; (n) is 2-10; X, Y, Z, and W are each H or F; C with a * mark is an optically active asymmetric carbon atom], for example, 4-(1-ethyl-5,5,5- trifluoropentyloxycarbonyl)phenyl (R)-4'-decyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylate. The compound of the formula I is obtained, for example, by esterifying an optically active phenol derivative of formula II [for example, 1-ethyl-5,5,5-trifluoropentyl (R)-4-hydroxybenzoate] with a carboxylic acid of formula III in the presence of a dehydrative condensation agent such as dicyclohexylcarbodiimide. |
