Method and apparatus for thermal cleaning, in which fluidisation gas is blown into the fluidised bed (3) at the bottom and at least part of the fluidised bed (3) is heated to a temperature between 200 and 650 degrees C, at least partly due to the introduction of thermal energy. The gases released above the fluidised bed (3) are burned. The distinguishing features are that the thermal energy is regulated during the first phase of the cleaning cycle as a function of the temperature above the fluidised bed (3) in such a way that the temperature is sufficiently high to ensure that the gases released are burned properly after the objects to be cleaned (18) have been placed inside, and that the input of thermal energy in the second phase is first reduced so that the fluidised bed (3) cools down to a lower operating temperature and is regulated further as a function of the temperature of the fluidised bed (3) in such a way that it is at or below the operating temperature by the end of the cleaning cycle.
