The method for determining the rigidity of packages whereby each package (8) requires a force for handling by human hand gripping it on two opposite side surfaces within a determined area. The package is pressed inwards mechanically at the determined area of two opposite side surfaces. The inwardly pressing force and section are measured during the whole inwardly pressing process and recorded to indicate the value of the combined force per length unit. The recorded values are processed mathematically to calculate the key data. This data comprises a point of the inwardly pressing process preceded by an introductory denting phase and succeeded by a stiffening phase. A second point of the process is when the package breaks apart under the influence of a breaking force. A final point satisfies the manual handling force and indicates the package grip rigidity expressed as a force per length unit. The manual handling force is calculated as being preferably 1.5 times the package weight.
